The Workers’ Party (WP) has expressed regret over Indonesia’s decision to reduce natural gas exports to Singapore, emphasizing the importance of upholding international commercial contracts. In a Facebook statement on October 25, 2026, the opposition party supported Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s earlier call to honor gas supply contracts, describing them as a matter of national importance.
The WP acknowledged that the current reduction of 17 billion British thermal units per day (BBTUD) over 18 days, less than 2% of Singapore’s daily gas demand, was manageable. However, the party highlighted the need for Singapore to diversify its energy supply chains amid an unpredictable global environment.
The remarks come amid tensions over the transboundary haze affecting Singapore and Indonesia. The WP clarified that its regret was tied to recent unrelated developments, including allegations involving Singapore’s sovereign wealth funds, GIC and Temasek, and their purported influence on Indonesia’s stock market classification.
Indonesia announced on October 24, 2026, that it would cut gas exports to Singapore by 31 BBTUD to prioritize domestic energy needs. The WP noted that Parliament had been informed in 2023 about the gradual decline in piped natural gas supplies from Indonesia, but assured that electricity supply would not be affected.
