WTI Crude Oil Price Rises Amid Tanker Attacks and Reduced Hormuz Traffic
The price of WTI crude oil has been rising due to positive fundamental drivers, including U.S.-Iran tanker attacks and sharply reduced traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The attacks have led to a significant increase in the reluctance of ship owners to trade crude oil, which can impact insurance rates and freight costs.
The market disruption has also resulted in a 10% decrease in commodity vessels crossing the Strait of Hormuz each day, with only 10 vessels passing through on average. This reduction in supply is expected to lead to increased competition amongst refiners and importers for crude oil outside the Gulf region.
OPEC+ has maintained its production policy unchanged, removing a potential bearish catalyst from the market. The group's decision not to increase production in October has been seen as bullish for WTI prices.
