WTI Crude Oil Prices Consolidate at Elevated Levels Amid Supply Concerns

WTI crude oil prices have entered a phase of consolidation at elevated levels after a significant rebound in the previous session. The market is currently being pulled in two directions by supply and demand factors. On one hand, the collapse of prospects for renewing the U.S.-Iran agreement has intensified supply concerns, with geopolitical tensions exposing short positions to the risk of forced covering. This has injected a new geopolitical risk premium into crude prices.

The failure to extend arrangements between the United States and Iran has reignited shipping risks in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that handles approximately one-fifth of global oil-related shipments. Any disruption to transportation can rapidly transmit shocks to global energy markets. Market data indicates that recent actual transit activity has been notably low, and related transportation bottlenecks have further intensified market concerns about persistent supply chain tightness.

However, the current rise in oil prices is not driven solely by supply-side factors; the downward pressure exerted by U.S. inventory data remains significant. The latest data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows that for the week ending August 7, U.S. commercial crude oil inventories increased by approximately 17.4 million barrels to about 424.4 million barrels.

From a technical perspective, WTI remains in a phase where a rebound coexists with medium-term pressure. Prices have regained the 20-day middle Bollinger Band, indicating a recovery in short-term buying interest, but the overall trend remains constrained by the 100-day Simple Moving Average (SMA). The next key support zone is near USD 81.70.
