WTI Oil Price Surges Amid Geopolitical Tensions Over Iranian Tanker Strikes
WTI oil prices surged on Wednesday after the US struck several Iranian tankers near Kharg Island, a major crude export hub. The attacks heightened geopolitical tensions and raised concerns about further disruptions to global oil supplies.
The US officially stated that the strikes came in response to an attempted missile attack on a US warship. In retaliation, Iran launched ballistic missiles toward Jordan and warned vessels in the Persian Gulf to 'immediately abandon their vessels.'
Meanwhile, Iran-backed Houthi militants attacked energy infrastructure in southern Saudi Arabia, including the 400,000-barrel-a-day Jazan refinery.
The disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have forced refiners to look farther afield for alternative supplies, pushing up prices for African, Canadian, and Latin American crude. WTI oil price is currently trading around $92.30 during the Asian hours on Wednesday.
