WTI Oil Surges to $83.50 Amid Strait of Hormuz Uncertainty
The price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil has hit fresh highs at $83.50 amid growing uncertainty in the Middle East, particularly regarding the Strait of Hormuz's reopening.
Hopes for a durable peace agreement between the US and Iran have vanished as the two nations fail to find a formula to reopen the crucial waterway, entangled in reciprocal requests for compensation for war damages.
Tehran has restructured its military leadership with six new senior appointments, including former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Mohsen Rezaee taking over as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. The new security chief holds a skeptical view regarding negotiations with the US, which is not particularly promising in regard to the peace process.
Meanwhile, traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains restricted to a trickle, with only six vessels crossing on Monday, below the 10-11 average of recent weeks and a marginal percentage of the 130-160 ships that crossed before the war started in February.
