Airstrikes on the village of al-Shariya near Yemen's capital Sanaa killed at least 22 people on Saturday, according to the Health Ministry for Yemen's Houthi rebels. The ministry reported that at least 30 others were wounded in the attack. Ministry spokesperson Anees Alasbahi told the Associated Press that Saudi Arabia carried out the strikes, which hit several homes. Houthi-linked Al-Masirah broadcaster shared footage showing debris and wounded individuals in a hospital.
There was no immediate response from Saudi Arabia regarding the reported airstrikes. The conflict between Yemen's Houthis and Saudi Arabia has escalated recently, following the collapse of a yearslong truce over the summer. The Houthis have advanced along the Red Sea coast, capturing key territories including the port city of Mokha and strategic islands in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The Houthis have also targeted Saudi oil facilities, military infrastructure, and shipping in the Red Sea. The United Nations reported that over 1,600 people have been killed and more than 300,000 displaced since the fighting intensified. On Saturday, pro-government media reported that Yemeni government forces repelled a Houthi attack in Taiz province, while Saudi-led coalition forces intercepted a Houthi missile aimed at Riyadh province.
Additionally, an airstrike on a market in southern Yemen on Friday killed at least 30 people, with both the Houthis and Yemeni government forces blaming each other for the attack.
