Yemen Conflict Escalates: Houthi Rebels Capture Key Positions on Red Sea Coast

A recent Houthi rebel offensive in Yemen has sparked concerns of escalation in the Middle East and Europe. The rebels have captured strategically important positions on the Red Sea coast, threatening to shut down Saudi Arabia's ability to export oil.

The situation is further complicated by the involvement of major powers such as the US, Iran, Russia, and China. According to Simon Mabon, an expert in Middle East politics at the University of Lancaster, 'the complex patchwork of alliances involved, the likelihood of further oil price spikes, and the involvement of three major powers mean the Iran conflict has the potential to spiral out of control.'

NATO members are also concerned about Russia's belligerent moves, particularly in Ukraine. The alliance's Article 5 collective defence mechanism may be triggered in response to Russian aggression.
