Yemen Launches Major Operation Against Iran-Backed Houthis Amid Escalating Tensions
Yemen’s internationally recognized government has launched a major military operation against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who are advancing in the outskirts of the key southwestern city of Taiz. Rashad al-Alimi, head of the ruling Presidential Leadership Council, announced the operation from Saudi Arabia, stating its goal is to reclaim territories controlled by the Houthis. The rebels recently seized Yemen’s Red Sea coast and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, marking their largest land grab in recent years. Al-Alimi called for international support for his Saudi-backed government, while a Saudi military spokesperson emphasized the kingdom’s right to take necessary measures to deter the rebels.
Meanwhile, the Iranian parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, revealed that the U.S. has recently put forward proposals through a mediator, though no details were provided. Qalibaf, who led direct talks with the U.S. earlier this year, criticized Washington’s media statements, asserting that Iran’s seven conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz remain unchanged. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also reiterated Iran’s readiness for diplomatic solutions but warned of a stronger response if military confrontation resumes.
A commercial tanker reported explosions near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, with the crew reported safe. The UK Maritime Trade Operations Center is investigating the incident, which occurred 60 nautical miles south of the port city of Mokha. The Joint Maritime Information Center, overseen by the U.S. Navy, has classified the threat level in the area as substantial following the Houthis’ recent land seizure near the Strait.
In other developments, Iran’s oil minister resigned, with President Masoud Pezeshkian appointing Hamid Bovard as caretaker oil minister. The reason for the resignation remains unclear, but it comes amid intense pressure from U.S. sanctions and a naval blockade affecting Iran’s oil exports. Additionally, Israeli strikes in Gaza killed two people, including a Turkish aid agency volunteer, escalating tensions in the region.
