YPF Aims for November Decision on 12 Mt/y Argentina LNG Project
Argentina’s state-run energy company YPF has set a target date of late November for making a final investment decision (FID) on its proposed Argentina LNG project. This initiative aims to produce 12 million tonnes per year (Mt/y) of liquefied natural gas, leveraging the abundant gas reserves from the Vaca Muerta Shale. The timeline has been narrowed down to ensure timely progress as US financing and contractors increase their involvement in the region.
The Argentina LNG project is slated to begin operations around 2030, pending the FID. The gas for the project will be sourced from the Vaca Muerta Shale, which is already a key focus for energy companies operating in Argentina. Upstream interests in the project are shared by Eni and XRG, indicating significant international collaboration.
YPF’s decision to expedite the FID reflects growing interest and investment in Argentina’s natural gas sector, particularly in export-oriented projects. The Vaca Muerta Shale’s vast reserves make it a strategic asset for boosting Argentina’s role in the global LNG market.
