YPF Posts Record Earnings on Back of Shale Production Boom
Argentina's state-backed energy company YPF reported significant gains in its second-quarter earnings. The company posted a net profit of $1.21 billion for the April-to-June period, a substantial increase from last year's $58 million.
The revenue climbed 42% year-on-year to $6.57 billion, exceeding analysts' expectations of $6.10 billion. This was driven by record shale production, stronger refining performance, and higher international oil prices.
YPF attributed its earnings growth to the success of Vaca Muerta, a vast shale formation in Argentina's Neuquén Basin that has become central to the country's energy strategy. Shale oil production rose 47% year-on-year to an average of 213,000 barrels per day.
The company remains on track to increase shale oil production to 250,000 barrels per day by the end of 2026 and is advancing its development and export strategy for Vaca Muerta. This includes positioning Argentina as a major LNG exporter through a proposed 12 million tonnes per annum LNG export facility.
