Zelensky Condemns Russian Drone Strike on Cargo Ship in Black Sea
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned a Russian drone strike that sank a cargo ship in the Black Sea, calling the attack 'horrific.' The strike reportedly killed the ship's captain and left another crew member missing. The vessel, named Royad Mammadov, was carrying corn and owned by Turkey. Eleven crew members from Azerbaijan and India were rescued after the incident, which occurred about 30 nautical miles south of the Romanian port of Sfantu Gheorghe.
Romania's Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed a fire broke out on the ship, but the cause remains unknown. President Zelensky accused Russia of systematically targeting civilian vessels, stating that the strike demonstrates Russia's choice of 'terror over normal maritime navigation.' Russia has not commented on the incident, though its military previously claimed it was targeting cargo vessels in response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure.
Zelensky asserted that Ukraine's operations against oil facilities aim to undermine Russia's financial resources for the ongoing conflict, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. The incident has heightened tensions in the Black Sea and raised concerns about broader instability in Eastern Europe. Romania, along with other NATO members, has reported similar incursions in its airspace as drone usage rises.
The Romanian naval forces have destroyed nine drifting sea mines since the start of hostilities. Zelensky called for international pressure to ensure global food security, emphasizing the need for stability in the Black Sea region, a critical area for grain exports. Western allies, including Germany, have expressed concern over the potential ramifications of such strikes, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz preparing for heightened hybrid warfare scenarios.
