$17 Billion Lost: Crypto Users Hit by Private Key Attacks

Share

Crypto users have lost over $17 billion to private key attacks in the past decade, according to data from DefiLlama.

The 518 recorded incidents involved various methods, including brute force attacks and phishing attempts targeting multi-signature wallets.

The majority of losses were due to credential weaknesses rather than flaws in protocol code, with wallet security, signing infrastructure, and user behavior contributing to the problem.

A recent report from GSR found that DeFi protocols lost over $600 million in 60 days, with attackers shifting focus towards operational security and human vulnerabilities.
