$20 Billion in Crypto Prediction Bets Fuel Record On-Chain Activity at FIFA World Cup
According to a report by blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis, the 2026 FIFA World Cup generated $20 billion in prediction market volume and $24 million in digital collectible trades. The tournament saw over 400,000 wallets participate in blockchain-based betting, generating $5.7 billion in trading volume.
The majority of on-chain activity was driven by legitimate fans, with less than 1% linked to illicit sources. Chainalysis found that only $5.4 million in flows came from sanctioned sources, with the single-largest source being Huobi/HTX, a China-founded exchange controlled by Hong Kong-based billionaire Justin Sun.
While the tournament saw significant activity in prediction markets, including novelty questions like whether Cristiano Ronaldo would cry at the end of his campaign (he did), 55% of bettors came out ahead. However, Chainalysis warned that illicit finance remains a problem and urged vigilance as on-chain economies continue to move into the mainstream.
The report also highlighted the success of FIFA's official 'FIFA Collect' platform, which allowed fans to buy and sell digital moments commemorating the tournament's biggest stars. The platform generated at least $24 million in trading volume before and during the World Cup.
