$206 Million Crypto Contributions Spark Election Season Controversy
Crypto firms have made significant contributions to political action committees ahead of the US midterm elections. A total of $206 million was donated by crypto companies to super PACs and hybrid PACs in the second quarter, surpassing all other corporate sectors. The largest contributor is Fairshake, a leading crypto-industry super PAC backed by Coinbase and Ripple, which held about $113 million in cash as of late July.
Fairshake has spent around $70 million independently across 54 races, with $32.5 million supporting Republican candidates, $21.3 million backing Democratic candidates, and $15.6 million opposing Democratic candidates. The funds were distributed among various states, with a significant portion targeting key battlegrounds.
The financial contributions from crypto firms have raised questions about the influence of the industry in US politics. Critics argue that such donations can lead to undue favoritism towards certain industries and policies, potentially impacting regulatory decisions.
