21-Bank Stablecoin Consortium Launches with Ambitious Plans
A new dollar stablecoin backed by 21 global financial institutions is set to launch in the first half of 2027.
The consortium, which includes Bank of America, Citi, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, UBS, and other major banks across North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, plans to offer a US dollar-denominated stablecoin with potential expansions into G7 currencies.
Industry experts say that while institutional backing can provide an initial advantage, it will not guarantee adoption unless the token can match the liquidity, accessibility, and portability of established alternatives like USDT and USDC.
Utkarsh Ahuja, founder and managing partner at Moon Pursuit Capital, noted that the consortium starts with relationships that normally take new financial products years to develop, citing connections to corporate treasury departments, international payments, and compliance systems across several jurisdictions.
