21 Financial Giants Unite for Regulated Stablecoin Launch
A group of 21 major financial institutions has formed a consortium to develop and issue regulated stablecoins. The consortium includes Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Citi, Deutsche Bank, UBS, Santander, MUFG, and Fidelity Investments. The goal is to launch a US dollar stablecoin in the first half of 2027, pending corporate formation and regulatory approval.
The consortium plans to expand into other G7-denominated stablecoins after the initial dollar product. A euro stablecoin will be the next priority, reflecting both currency demand and regional regulatory expectations. The group aims to address wholesale, institutional, and retail use cases, including cross-border payments and digital asset settlement.
The consortium's initiative is designed to comply with the US GENIUS Act and the European Union's MiCA framework. This alignment with regulations matters for market participants as stablecoin issuance, distribution, and reserve management face heightened scrutiny once products move from pilots into mainstream financial rails.
