$215 Million Quantum Competition Sparks Concerns Over Bitcoin Security

The US Department of Energy has launched the Quantum Genesis Q Competition, providing up to $215 million in funding for private companies to develop fault-tolerant quantum computers with at least 100 logical qubits and hundreds of millions of reliable operations.

This breakthrough could mark a turning point for quantum computing and has long-term consequences for Bitcoin. Currently, today's quantum computers are far from perfection, as errors quickly ruin long calculations. Fault tolerance uses error correction to keep those calculations running reliably, making the technology more useful for serious science.

The risk for Bitcoin is that a powerful enough quantum computer could break the 256-bit elliptic-curve system used by the cryptocurrency, potentially recovering private keys and compromising security. Estimates suggest breaking this system would require roughly 1,200 to 1,450 logical qubits, but the DOE's target of 100 is still significant progress.

BIP 360 and BIP 361 are draft proposals that outline paths for reducing public-key exposure and eventually migrating away from vulnerable signature schemes. This migration could take years and involve wallets, exchanges, custodians, and users.
