2.27M New Bitcoin Wallets Emerge Amid Coldcard Security Concerns
Santiment's latest on-chain data shows that a security scare in the hardware wallet market has triggered a surge in new Bitcoin wallets. In the week ending August 8, 2.27 million new Bitcoin wallets were created, the highest weekly total in 12 months. This spike in new address creation came alongside 751,000 active wallets during the same period, marking the strongest level of network activity recorded in the past 10 months.
The catalyst for this rotation was a security vulnerability associated with Coldcard hardware wallets. When users suspect their custody setup is compromised, they tend to generate a fresh wallet, sweep funds to the new address, and figure out the rest later. This kind of rotation looks identical on-chain to genuine new adoption, but in this case, it's driven by existing users reacting to a known security incident.
Santiment analysts noted that spikes in wallet creation driven by security incidents don't necessarily signal weakness in the Bitcoin network itself. In fact, such events often precede upward price movements in Bitcoin. The current setup offers a specific signal for traders and investors to track: whether the wallet creation spike normalizes quickly or continues to build.
