$24 Million Near-Miss: Compound's Narrow Vote Highlights DAO Governance Flaws
Compound almost transferred $24 million to a group of voters in July 2024, but a last-minute turnaround prevented the release. Proposal 289 was approved by a narrow margin of 682,191 votes to 633,636 after a surge of favorable votes in the final 34 minutes. This represented 82% of all support for the measure.
The rapid accumulation of votes exposed the lack of an emergency authority to pause execution. Following this incident, Compound reached an agreement that canceled the allocation and implemented a veto function in governance.
Researchers have analyzed the case as an example of a recurring dilemma in Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs): strengthening defenses against hostile votes can concentrate power among participants or influence the outcome.
