$240 Million Bitcoin Heist Unraveled: 'Ferris Bueller Gone Bad'
In one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts in US history, a group of young men duped an individual out of over $240 million in Bitcoin. The heist occurred in August 2024 and involved multiple defendants, with Malone Lam, 22, serving as the alleged ringleader.
Lam and his co-conspirators spent lavishly on lavish items such as sports cars, private jets, mansions in Miami and the Hamptons, and security guards. The group also used stolen cryptocurrency to purchase a $2 million watch and over 30 cars, including Porsches, Lamborghinis, and Ferraris.
The scam involved 'social engineering,' where the perpetrators tricked the victim into giving them access to his Google Drive and revealing security codes that allowed them to funnel over 4,100 Bitcoin. The group targeted a wealthy, longtime crypto investor who was approached by multiple callers claiming to be from reputable companies such as Google and Gemini.
As the investigation unfolded, authorities discovered that the scammers laundered the stolen money through different exchange platforms to convert it into government-issued currency. One of the defendants, Veer Chetal, even gifted a Lamborghini to his parents and hid a duffel bag filled with $500,000 in cash in their laundry machine.
However, the group's excessive spending eventually drew attention, leading to their downfall. On September 9, 2024, FBI agents searched Chetal's apartment in Brunswick, New Jersey, and found $37 million in stolen cryptocurrency in his possession. Lam was arrested at one of his Miami mansions on the same day.
The case has highlighted the vulnerabilities of cryptocurrency investors to social engineering scams and the need for greater awareness and caution when dealing with sensitive information.
