$245M Crypto Heist Mastermind Pleads Guilty, Exposed as Ringleader

Malone Lam, a 22-year-old Singaporean citizen and recent Miami resident, pleaded guilty to participating in a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) conspiracy. The Justice Department identified Lam as the ringleader of an international enterprise that stole and laundered cryptocurrency valued at more than $245 million.

The network used deception and break-ins to drain crypto wallets, with members spending proceeds on luxury goods like exotic cars worth up to $3.8 million and private jets. The operation was organized through online gaming platforms, with hackers, burglars, and money launderers working together to carry out the scheme.

Prosecutors listed nightclub services costing up to $500,000 per evening, watches valued over $500,000, rental homes, security guards, and other high-end items among the stolen funds' uses. Lam was arrested at his Miami rental home on Sept. 18, 2024, after being accused of conspiring with Jeandiel Serrano to steal more than $230 million from one Washington victim.

The federal case first emerged publicly in September 2024, when prosecutors accused Lam and Serrano of conspiring to steal and launder more than $230 million from the Washington victim. The original charges centered on more than 4,100 Bitcoin, which the conspirators allegedly obtained during an Aug. 18, 2024, social-engineering attack.
