$245M Crypto Heist Ringleader Pleads Guilty in RICO Conspiracy

A 22-year-old Singaporean man, Malone Lam, has pleaded guilty to leading an international group that stole and laundered over $245 million in cryptocurrency. The group, involved in a RICO conspiracy, targeted crypto holders and scammed them through social engineering tactics.

Lam adopted various online alter egos, including '$$$', 'Anne Hathaway', and 'King Greavy', and was responsible for selecting victims and assigning roles to participants. The group's focus was on gaining trust to obtain private details, rather than directly breaking into wallets.

In the largest theft reported, members masqueraded as representatives of Google and crypto exchange Gemini, tricking an investor from Washington, D.C., into handing over access to their online accounts and security codes. Over 4,100 Bitcoin was drained from the victim's wallet, worth approximately $245 million.

The stolen funds were converted to cash, financing an extravagant lifestyle for the group. They spent money on private flights, rented homes in Miami and the Hamptons, security guards, expensive clothing, watches, and exotic vehicles, with some nightclub expenses reaching up to $500,000 in a single evening.
