$32 Trillion in USDC Transfers Fails to Translate into Transaction Fees

Circle's USDC stablecoin processed an astonishing $32 trillion in transfers by August this year, according to Coin Metrics. This figure represents a significant milestone for the company, demonstrating the widespread adoption and usage of its digital currency.

However, despite this impressive transfer volume, Circle's revenue remains heavily reliant on interest rates. In fact, 95% of its revenue comes from reserve income, which is generated by the assets backing USDC.

The company's blockchain infrastructure, Arc, is scheduled for a public mainnet launch on September 16. This project aims to create a more direct fee surface around USDC usage and potentially diversify Circle's revenue streams. While the success of Arc will be crucial in determining whether Circle can capture a repeatable share of activity generated by its stablecoin, it remains unclear how much gas-fee revenue the company will retain.

Circle's dependence on interest rates is evident in its quarterly financials, where reserve income accounted for $667.7 million out of total revenue of $701.3 million. This figure represents a 6.6% increase from the previous quarter, with the majority of this growth attributed to a 25.2% rise in average daily USDC circulation.

The company's SEC filing highlights the importance of circulation in driving reserve income. As more USDC is issued, it expands the reserve base that earns interest, contributing significantly to Circle's revenue.
