$3.3M in Fees vs. $493.7M in Rewards: Cardano's Economic Gap Widens
Cardano's staking rewards far outstrip transaction fees on the blockchain. According to data from Bitquery, the total amount of $ADA collected in transaction fees between September 1, 2025 and September 1, 2026 was just 3.3 million $ADA. This pales in comparison to the 493.7 million $ADA distributed as staking rewards over the same period.
The fee-to-reward ratio is a concerning sign for Cardano's economic viability. Fees covered only about 0.668% of total rewards, leaving a significant gap that needs to be bridged through increased activity or revenue growth.
Another worrying trend on Cardano is the decline in transactions and staking participation. Daily transaction numbers fell by 72.46% from 90,294 in 2022 to 24,869 in 2026, while the share of circulating $ADA staked decreased from 75.6% to 58.3% over the same period.
The Cardano reserve is designed to shrink over time, which will reduce emissions and lower reward outlays. This could make it easier for fees to replace a larger share of rewards in the future. However, scaling up the network's capacity through upgrades like Linear Leios may be necessary to achieve this goal.
