$3.4 Billion Stolen: Crypto Wallet Security Under Attack
The past year saw one of the worst years on record for cryptocurrency theft, with over $3.4 billion stolen according to Chainalysis's 2026 Crypto Crime Report.
A significant portion of these losses came from personal wallet compromises, with attackers targeting seed phrases typed into fake sites, malware that siphoned private keys, and browser extensions that quietly drained approved tokens.
About $713 million was stolen directly from personal wallets in 2025, affecting around 80,000 victims and averaging a loss of nearly $4,500 each. This represents a significant shift in attack strategy, as personal wallets made up just 7.3% of stolen crypto value in 2022 but rose to 44% by 2024.
