$500 Million in XRP: The Forgotten Cryptocurrency Legacy of Matthew Mellon
Matthew Mellon's death in 2018 was a significant loss for the cryptocurrency community. At the time of his passing, he held approximately $500 million worth of XRP on devices registered under other people's names.
The will left behind by Mellon never mentioned cryptocurrency assets, which made it difficult for his estate to recover these funds. It took three years and a long process for the estate to finally access the XRP holdings.
According to Jake Claver, a finance expert who discussed this case on X, 'a will is only a map to assets the estate can actually reach.' This highlights the gap between wealth and access in the context of digital assets. Unlike traditional financial infrastructure, such as brokerage accounts or bank accounts, hardware wallets holding cryptocurrency often lack custodians or named beneficiaries.
Claver emphasizes that this is not a hypothetical risk but a real-life scenario that has already occurred with one of the most prominent XRP holders in history. He stresses the importance for serious crypto investors to build legal infrastructure around their assets while they are still alive and in control.
