$600K Lost to Cryptocurrency Scam on Vancouver Island

Oceanside RCMP reported that an Island resident lost $600,000 to a cryptocurrency scam. The victim claimed to have been swindled by a scheme promoted in an online advertisement, which allegedly featured an endorsement from a politician.

The incident occurred on June 23, and is part of a larger trend of scams affecting Parksville Qualicum Beach residents. Between June 22 and 28, the Oceanside RCMP received 323 complaints, including reports of stolen vehicles, property damage, and other crimes.

Some of the reported incidents include a commercial vehicle stolen from a parking lot in Parksville on June 22, which was recovered by police two days later. Other victims reported stolen e-bikes, ornamental mushroom statues, and tools from construction sites.
