£72 Million Crypto Donation Sparks Debate Over UK Political Donations

Reform UK has received a record-breaking £72 million donation from crypto entrepreneurs Christopher Harborne and Ben Delo, sparking debate over how UK political donations should be regulated.

The combined gift dwarfs any previous single donation in British politics, exceeding the total amount raised by every UK party across the whole of last year. The donations are legal under current rules because both men are registered as voters in the UK, a technical status that allows them to give unlimited sums despite living abroad.

Legislation currently before Parliament would cap donations from British citizens living overseas at £100,000, but it does not apply to UK-registered voters like Harborne and Delo. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has refused to back a backbench push to extend the £100,000 cap to donations made from within the UK itself.

Angela Rayner said the government is looking at tougher rules so billionaires who don’t pay UK taxes “can’t buy your way into our democracy.” Reform's deputy leader Richard Tice said Delo's donation was structured as an upfront sum “so that the Labour Party can't legislate against it,” with the money expected to be spent over two or three years.
