$74 Million Cronos Network Exploit Successfully Contained
The Cronos Network has resumed producing blocks after an emergency pause to prevent further damage from a Tectonic exploit. The incident occurred when validators halted the chain to stop the attack, which was detected earlier in the day.
Cronos said that the shutdown was taken to protect users once the Tectonic exploit was detected. The team restored the chain's state to the point before the attack and resumed normal block production after implementing a fix.
The attacker managed to drain around $74 million from Tectonic, but only successfully bridged about $6 million to Ethereum before the chain was paused, leaving an estimated $60 million stuck and unrecoverable by the attacker. This suggests that the emergency pause worked as intended, even if questions remain about how the Tectonic protocol was breached in the first place.
