$8 Million Coinsbuy Hack: Sophisticated Attacker Strikes TRON and Ethereum
A coordinated attack on August 9 left cryptocurrency platform Coinsbuy reeling after $8.07 million was drained from its TRON and Ethereum wallets.
The attacker, who researchers from BlockWatchdog dubbed a 'sophisticated' hacker, began with a test transaction of 5 USDT on the TRON network before withdrawing approximately $6.04 million from eight blockchain wallets in about an hour.
Simultaneously, the hacker drained three addresses on Ethereum of $1.89 million USDT and 77 ETH, exchanging funds for 981.1 ETH through the 1inch cross-chain service using a wallet created within the same hour.
About 79% of the stolen funds passed through the exchange FixedFloat, utilizing approximately 50 disposable addresses, before being frozen by ChangeNOW after Specter Investigations intervened.
Researchers noted that Coinsbuy's team replenished the affected wallets just one day later, sending $3.93 million USDT back to the same 10 addresses, with seven transactions matching the stolen amounts to within 0.05%.
