€95M Fideuram Heist: AI-Generated Scam Targets Intesa Sanpaolo CEO

Intesa Sanpaolo's private banking arm, Fideuram, suffered a massive loss of €95 million due to an AI-generated voice cloning scam. The scammers used WhatsApp messages and fake emails to convince former chairman Paolo Molesini that CEO Carlo Messina was requesting urgent overseas transfers.

The scheme started in February 2026 when Molesini received the initial WhatsApp message from what appeared to be Messina's number. A follow-up phone call, supposedly with a lawyer named Paolo Nastasi, further convinced Molesini to transfer funds using AI-cloned voices.

Fideuram quickly flagged the transfers as irregular and contacted international banking counterparts, leading to the recovery of around €53-59 million through cooperation with Chinese banks. However, approximately €36 million remains unaccounted for, having been converted into cryptocurrencies.
