a16z-Backed Blockchain Project Linera Shuts Down Due to Insufficient Funding
Linera, a blockchain project backed by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), has shut down operations due to insufficient funding. The team behind Linera announced the decision via Discord, stating that they could no longer continue operations without sufficient funds.
The project raised around $12 million across two rounds in 2022 and 2023, with a16z participating in both rounds. However, despite this backing, Linera's recent community token sale on the Sonar platform fell short of its target, attracting only nearly $900,000 in commitments.
The team acknowledged that all contributions had been fully refunded, but offered no guarantees of future benefits to contributors who spent time and effort participating in the testnet. A more considered shutdown would typically involve advance notice to the community, a clear timeline for data preservation, transparent accounting of remaining funds, and an open-source release of the codebase.
The shutdown is part of a wider pattern of blockchain projects struggling to maintain momentum in a funding environment that has tightened significantly since 2022. Linera's situation serves as a reminder that institutional backing from a prior cycle does not guarantee community confidence or fundraising success in the next one.
