a16z-Backed Linera Shuts Down After Failing to Secure Mainnet Funding
Linera, a Layer 1 project backed by prominent investors including a16z Crypto and Borderless Capital, has ceased operations after failing to secure sufficient funding to reach mainnet. The decision was made public on September 18 through Linera's official Discord channel.
The team had raised $12 million in total from its seed rounds, but the community token sale for LNRA fell short of the minimum threshold of $1.5 million in USDC required to proceed. Although 848,271 USDC was raised from 617 participants, representing 56.6% of the target amount, this was not enough to unlock additional funding.
The project's founder, Mathieu Baudet, had previously worked on Meta's blockchain research and drew inspiration from its architecture in developing Linera's microchain concept. This approach aimed to increase capacity by adding chains, allowing validators to distribute activity across machines as demand grew.
Existing community points balances will be recorded, but their future value is uncertain as there are no plans for a new token distribution or exchange listing. The shutdown leaves the project in an unusual position, having progressed through years of development without ever reaching mainnet.
