a16z-Backed Linera Shuts Down After Token Sale Misses Funding Threshold
Linera, a Layer-1 blockchain project backed by Andreessen Horowitz's crypto arm, has shut down operations effective immediately. The decision was made after its community token sale on the Sonar platform fell short of its minimum funding threshold by $651,700 USDC, failing to reach the required 1.5 million USDC.
The project raised approximately $12 million across two private rounds, with a16z Crypto leading the first round and Borderless Capital leading the second. Despite this significant backing, Linera was unable to secure sufficient capital through emergency financing efforts or a successful community sale.
Founder Mathieu Baudet framed the closure as a funding problem, not a reflection of the technology, development team, or community support. The project's core technical idea was the microchain, a design in which many small blockchains run in parallel rather than forcing all transactions through a single execution stream.
The shutdown will roll out in stages, with Linera closing its applications and taking its Discord community offline. User point balances will remain recorded, but there is no commitment regarding token conversion or financial value. The team warned community members to be cautious of anyone claiming to sell LNRA tokens or points.
