a16z Crypto Leads $25M Seed Round for Blockchain-Native National Bank OpenReserve
OpenReserve, a fintech company building a blockchain-integrated national bank, has closed a $25 million seed round led by a16z crypto. The funding round also includes participation from Coinbase Ventures among 11 investors.
The startup has already received preliminary conditional approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to form a nationally chartered bank. OpenReserve plans to operate as a fully digital, blockchain-native bank targeting digital-asset clients, offering deposits, lending, payments, and tokenized asset products.
The company's ReserveUSD (rUSD) is a compliant stablecoin that will be issued through its subsidiary, ReserveUSD, LLC. The regulatory backdrop for OpenReserve is significant, with the US stablecoin regulation crystallizing around the GENIUS Act, legislation designed to create clear federal frameworks for stablecoin issuers.
The $25 million seed round is a substantial investment in OpenReserve's efforts to navigate the complex regulatory environment and bring its vision of a blockchain-native national bank to life. However, as with any regulatory-dependent venture, there are risks involved, including the possibility that remaining approvals may not be granted.
