Aave Founder Criticizes EU Proposals on Stablecoin Yield and DeFi Regulation
Aave founder Stani Kulechov has criticized the European Central Bank (ECB) and European Banking Authority (EBA) for their proposals on stablecoin yield and decentralized finance (DeFi) regulation.
The ECB and EBA have argued that stablecoin-yield restrictions should cover indirect returns generated through lending, borrowing, and staking. They have also recommended that the European Commission consider rules for crypto-asset lending, including CASP-facilitated access to DeFi lending protocols.
Kulechov, in a recent post, expressed his disappointment with the ECB and EBA's responses to the MiCA consultation. He argued that the proposed approach could make access to open DeFi more restrictive, potentially leading to 'walled gardens' where users have limited access to financial protocols.
Aave has previously submitted a response to the European Commission's MiCA review, arguing that EU rules should distinguish decentralized protocols from financial intermediaries. The company has also proposed that regulation should focus on identifiable entities that control assets, users, or financial activity.
