Aave Founder Slams Proposed Ethereum Staking Limit: 'Significant Damage' Possible
Aave founder Stani Kulechov has expressed strong opposition to a proposed Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) that aims to limit staking returns. The proposal suggests reducing the staking return to 0% if the staked ETH ratio exceeds 50% of the total supply.
Kulechov argues that this structure would make staking revenues unpredictable, rendering the activity uneconomical for many participants. He notes that institutional investors value predictable cash flows when building ETH positions and may turn to alternative blockchain networks offering more stable income if returns become uncertain.
The Aave CEO also warns that reducing staking yields to zero would render lending and yield strategies conducted via ETH largely ineffective, limiting the primary use case for ETH borrowing to short selling. He believes investors using ETH-linked yield products might turn to stablecoins or other interest-bearing assets, potentially shrinking Ethereum-based lending and yield markets.
Kulechov concludes that the proposal would weaken ETH's viability as an asset and limit its long-term potential, urging careful consideration of the impact on DeFi, staking, and institutional adoption.
