Aave Launches Tokenized Stock Collateralized Lending with Weekend Price Gap Risk
Aave Labs has launched its tokenized stock collateralized lending feature on September 25. The Base market now allows seven Coinbase stock tokens to be used as collateral for USDC loans. This means that stablecoin lenders participating in this pool will bear the risk of weekend price gaps.
The oracle prices for stock collateral will remain locked at Friday's prices until Sunday evening, while borrowers can still trade tokens over the weekend. However, the protocol will only recognize deteriorating position health due to falling stock prices once the oracle resumes pricing on Monday.
LlamaRisk is responsible for setting the initial market parameters and clarifying that USDC lenders are voluntarily assuming this equity exposure, with risk isolated from other Aave markets. The Chainlink equity oracle combines underlying share prices with Coinbase issuer multipliers, with operating hours set from Sunday 8:00 PM EST to Friday 8:00 PM EST.
During the oracle downtime, health metrics calculated based on price for collateralized positions cannot reflect the latest market data. Even with frozen oracle quotes, accrued interest on USDC loans can still push positions past the liquidation threshold. Liquidators will then need to hold the seized collateral exposure until Monday when regular US stock trading hours resume.
