Absa and Ripple Bring Bank-Grade Crypto Custody to South African Institutions
Absa Corporate and Investment Banking has launched a digital asset custody platform in South Africa using Ripple's technology. This allows institutional clients to securely store their crypto assets and manage private keys through a major African bank.
The new service, offered on Absa's Digital Asset Custody platform, provides a regulated environment for institutional digital assets, applying traditional financial-industry standards around governance, approvals, compliance, and recoverability. This is in contrast to treating crypto custody as a separate, lightly controlled product.
The timing of this launch is significant, given that Sub-Saharan Africa received more than $205 billion in onchain crypto value between July 2024 and June 2025, representing a 52% increase from the previous year. According to Chainalysis, this makes it one of the most lucrative regions for cryptocurrency adoption.
Absa's Head of Digital Product for Custody, Robyn Lawson, emphasizes that institutional adoption is shifting the debate from 'who holds the keys?' towards how those keys are governed.
