Abstract Ethereum Layer-2 Network to Shut Down December 15
Abstract, the Ethereum layer-2 network developed by Igloo Inc., the parent company of Pudgy Penguins, will cease operations on December 15. The team announced the shutdown on X, urging users to withdraw their funds before the deadline through the Migration Hub or the network's native bridge, which has a three-hour delay. Any remaining assets will become inaccessible after the cutoff date.
The decision to shut down comes after Abstract struggled to expand beyond its focus on consumer crypto. The team cited a limited DeFi ecosystem, low on-chain liquidity, minimal institutional involvement, and a smaller budget compared to competitors as key challenges. Despite processing over 325 million transactions and generating more than $40 million in ecosystem revenue, the model proved unsustainable.
Abstract is the second Ethereum layer-2 network to announce its shutdown in recent days. Last week, Blast, another layer-2 network backed by Paradigm, also revealed plans to wind down due to unsustainable operating costs. Abstract's engineers will assist projects built on the network to migrate to other chains, but users are warned to be vigilant against impersonators and fake migration sites.
The network, a ZK-rollup that verifies transactions on Ethereum using zero-knowledge proofs, was intended to support consumer crypto applications. Brands like Red Bull Racing and Disney had utilized the chain to engage with audiences, but these efforts were not enough to ensure its longevity.
