Abstract Ethereum Layer-2 Shuts Down After Millions in Losses
Abstract, an Ethereum layer-2 blockchain developed by Igloo Inc., the parent company of Pudgy Penguins, announced its shutdown this year following significant financial losses and an inability to achieve product-market fit. The network, which launched its mainnet in January 2025, aimed to simplify crypto for mainstream users by targeting the entertainment sector. Despite deploying over 144 apps, onboarding more than 400,000 users, and securing partnerships with major brands like Red Bull Racing and Disney, Abstract struggled with institutional crossover, thin liquidity, and a limited DeFi ecosystem.
Luca Netz, CEO of Igloo Inc., revealed that the company had been funding Abstract for the past 18 months, accumulating tens of millions of dollars in losses over two years. Despite assembling a strong team and building a large community, the consumer-focused approach proved unsustainable. Abstract cited these challenges as key constraints on its growth, leading to the decision to shut down the network.
Users with funds on Abstract are urged to bridge their assets off the chain by December 15, 2026, using the Migration Hub or Native Bridge. Any remaining funds will become inaccessible after the deadline. The engineering and ecosystem teams will assist Abstract-based projects in migrating to other chains.
Abstract’s shutdown adds to a growing list of blockchain networks struggling to sustain their operations. Ethereum layer-2 Blast and Bitcoin-focused Botanix have also recently announced their closures due to similar challenges.
