Abstract Ethereum Layer 2 to Shut Down After Losing Tens of Millions
Abstract, an Ethereum Layer 2 network focused on consumer adoption, has announced it will shut down on December 15, 2026. The decision follows stagnant growth, thin liquidity, and limited institutional adoption, despite deploying over 144 apps and onboarded 400,000 users through partnerships with brands like Red Bull Racing and Disney. The project cited the unsustainability of operating a consumer-focused chain as a standalone model, given the evolving industry landscape.
Igloo Inc., the parent company behind Pudgy Penguins, has been funding Abstract for the past 18 months but lost "tens of millions of dollars," according to CEO Luca Netz. Igloo will now shift its resources toward Pudgy Penguins and its native token, PENGU. Netz emphasized that the company chose not to launch an Abstract token or pursue an ICO, as demand was insufficient to justify such a move.
The shutdown comes amid speculation fueled by reduced activity on Abstract's official accounts, departures of senior team members, and scrutiny of developer wallet activity. Netz acknowledged the disappointment but expressed pride in the ambition to venture into the challenging chain business. The decision follows closely after another Layer 2 network, Blast, announced its wind-down due to costs exceeding revenue.
