Wanying Zhang, a Southern California real estate agent accused of spying for China, faced serious allegations in court regarding her financial activities and personal conduct. Prosecutors revealed that Zhang had access to a secret Chinese cryptocurrency account containing $190,000, from which she was still receiving profits. They also highlighted her brother's ties to the Chinese government, suggesting potential influence or involvement in her actions.
During the hearing, Judge Steve Kim expressed skepticism about Zhang's fitness as a mother, referencing a seized iCloud video that prosecutors claimed would demonstrate her dangerous behavior. Despite her attorney Craig Harbaugh's request for home confinement, the judge ruled Zhang a flight risk, leading to her immediate custody by US Marshals without bail. She is scheduled to return to court on October 19.
Prosecutors further accused Zhang of making a dozen one-way trips to China, Paris, and Japan, which they argued indicated her intent to flee. Zhang's attorney countered that purchasing one-way tickets was a matter of economic practicality. The hearing also uncovered details of Zhang's alleged espionage activities, including surveilling the son of Taiwan President Ching-te Lai in Seattle in September 2025.
Zhang's arrest comes amid a string of high-profile cases in California involving alleged covert Chinese government activity. Former Arcadia mayor Eileen Wang and ex-Rep. Eric Swalwell have also been linked to such cases, raising concerns about Beijing's influence in the US.
