Ad Blockers Fall Short: Cryptojacking Attacks Surge Past One Billion Hits

Cryptojacking attacks have surged in recent years, with over 1.06 billion hits recorded in 2023, a 659% increase from the previous year. Ad blockers like AdBlock and uBlock Origin include built-in protections against known mining scripts, but dedicated extensions like MinerBlock target crypto mining scripts specifically.

AdBlock ships with a 'Cryptocurrency Mining Protection List' enabled by default, which blocks domains and scripts associated with browser-based mining operations. The extension relies on regularly updated blocklists maintained by community contributors and security researchers.

Dedicated anti-mining extensions like MinerBlock use two detection methods simultaneously to catch mining scripts: blocking requests and scripts loaded from a curated blacklist of known mining domains, and detecting CoinHive-style mining behavior within loaded scripts. Running a dedicated anti-mining extension alongside a general ad blocker provides layered protection.

Google's analysis found that 86% of compromised cloud instances were deployed for mining, with miners deployed within 22 seconds of access in 58% of cases. To maximize browser-level cryptojacking defense, users should install one general ad blocker and one dedicated mining extension, keeping extensions updated to stay ahead of new mining domains and obfuscation techniques.
