Advisors Struggle to Keep Pace with Crypto-Savvy Clients
The gap between clients' digital assets and their traditional financial advisors is widening. Many investors hold cryptocurrency as a long-term asset, including it in estate plans and expecting guidance from their advisors on custody, taxes, reporting, and transferring wealth to the next generation.
According to an informal survey among members of the Real Mamas of Crypto community, 50% of respondents consider cryptocurrency in the context of inheritance or family assets. However, almost none have entrusted their advisor with managing these digital assets.
The survey reveals that clients want advisors who are not just knowledgeable about cryptocurrency but also experienced in its management. They seek proven expertise, understanding of privacy, practical knowledge in taxes and custody, and confidence in the security and reliability of processes.
Advisors must adapt to this new reality by developing their skills in crypto taxation, custody options, private key transfer, inheritance mechanisms, and reporting. A family office approach is essential, integrating estate planning, tax preparation, tax strategy, and accounting into a single service.
