Affluent Investors Embrace Crypto as Mainstream Asset Class
A major shift is underway in the world of digital assets, as affluent investors increasingly embrace cryptocurrencies. A recent survey by CoinShares reveals that over half of wealthy households in seven key markets now hold some form of crypto exposure. This trend marks a significant departure from crypto's early days as a niche investment, signaling its growing acceptance among mainstream investors.
The CoinShares research, published on October 5, 2026, highlights that digital asset ownership among affluent respondents exceeds 50% across all markets surveyed. The holdings span a variety of assets, including bitcoin, ether, and stablecoins. This consistency across geographies suggests that crypto is no longer just a retail trading curiosity but a standard portfolio allocation for investors with substantial discretionary capital.
Complementing CoinShares' findings, a Visa study explores stablecoin sentiment in the Asia-Pacific region. Conducted between June and July 2026, the survey of 14,250 consumers aged 18 to 65 indicates a sharp rise in projected stablecoin adoption over the next five years. While current usage remains modest, with only 16% of respondents having used stablecoins in the past year, 46% express intent to use them within the next five years. The data suggests a growing recognition of stablecoins as practical tools for cross-border payments rather than speculative instruments.
However, significant barriers to adoption persist. Among consumers aware of stablecoins but not using them, 38% cite fraud concerns, and 36% point to a lack of understanding. Misconceptions are widespread, with nearly half believing stablecoins are only for crypto trading and more than four in ten mistakenly thinking their value always rises. Visa emphasizes the need for trustworthy, familiar, and compliant payment experiences to convert consumer interest into daily utility.
