Africa's Crypto Boom: Sub-Saharan Region Sees 52% Adoption Surge

Share

Sub-Saharan Africa has seen a significant surge in cryptocurrency adoption over the past year, with the region receiving more than $205 billion in on-chain cryptocurrency value between July 2024 and June 2025. This represents a 52% increase from the previous year, according to Chainalysis.

The growth is driven by strong activity in Nigeria, which accounted for over $92 billion of the total inflows. Stablecoins have become increasingly popular in the region due to their stable value and ability to facilitate faster and lower-cost digital transfers. This has made them particularly attractive in economies experiencing currency volatility and foreign exchange constraints.

Chainalysis data also shows that regional cryptocurrency activity experienced a significant surge during March 2025, with monthly on-chain transaction volumes approaching $25 billion. This growth was driven by heightened exchange activity in Nigeria following a sharp currency devaluation, illustrating how macroeconomic conditions continue to influence crypto transactions.
