Coinbase's Agentic Finance Push Challenges Crypto Founders' AI Pivot
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has pushed back against the idea that crypto companies should pivot to AI, calling it 'zero sum, scarcity thinking'. He argues that while AI may be able to write, plan, browse and trade, it still needs a way to move money without involving banks or humans. This is where Agentic Finance, or AiFi, comes in - Armstrong's vision for the payment layer that AI agents will need.
x402, a protocol developed by Coinbase, uses the 'Payment Required' status code to let software pay other services during web requests. It has already processed over 169 million payments across more than 590,000 buyers and 100,000 sellers in about a year. The x402 Foundation, launched on July 14 with 40 members including Coinbase, Cloudflare, and AWS, aims to put the protocol under formal open governance.
The Linux Foundation's launch of the x402 Foundation marks an important milestone for agentic finance. While some crypto founders may have moved to AI because capital moved, Armstrong argues that they should focus on building a payment layer that works with software rather than assuming AI infrastructure stops at the model and GPU level.
