Africa's Peer-to-Peer Crypto Boom Drives Resilient Adoption Amid Market Downturn
The latest report from Chainalysis reveals that peer-to-peer (P2P) activity in Africa was the primary driver of crypto adoption in the first half of 2026.
According to the 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index, global cryptocurrency activity proved resilient during the downturn, with on-chain economic activity falling just 1.6% to $9.4 trillion despite a 50% contraction in total crypto market capitalization.
The report highlights that stablecoins played a significant role in this growth, with cross-border stablecoin transfers rising 77.5% to $220.3 billion and estimated monthly flows more than doubling to $24 billion by June 2026.
Africa led the way in crypto adoption, with Sub-Saharan Africa recording the world's fastest growth driven largely by strong P2P activity. Nigeria ranked first globally for both domestic P2P activity and cross-border flows, while South Africa ranked ninth overall and fourth in P2P activity.
