Agentic AI Used to Target Cryptocurrency Wallets in Sophisticated Scams
Cybercriminals are exploiting the trend of Agentic AI to target cryptocurrency wallets, according to a report by HP Wolf Security. Threat actors are advertising fake AI trading agents to lure users into downloading malware, which scans their browser for legitimate wallet extensions and replaces them with malicious lookalikes.
The malware then harvests entered credentials, allowing attackers direct access to drain users' crypto assets. Patrick Schläpfer, Principal Threat Researcher at HP Security Lab, notes that cybercriminals are leveraging the rapid adoption of Agentic AI tools to create convincing lures that trick users into downloading malicious software.
The report also highlights a rise in QR code phishing campaigns aimed at redirecting users from secure PCs to less-protected mobile devices. Attackers distribute PDFs containing allegedly 'blurred' content for security purposes, prompting victims to scan a QR code using their smartphones.
